Have you ever bought bananas or mangoes from the market that looked perfect—maybe a little too perfect? That might be because they were ripened using harmful chemicals. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is now stepping up to stop this illegal practice.
Why Chemical Ripening Is a Problem
Ripe fruits may look great, but when they’re ripened using synthetic chemicals like calcium carbide, they can be dangerous to eat. These chemicals can cause health problems ranging from headaches to more serious issues like kidney or liver damage.
That’s why FSSAI is cracking down hard. Artificial ripening not only cheats consumers but also poses serious health risks.
What is FSSAI Doing About It?
The FSSAI recently issued a strong warning to fruit sellers, distributors, and even wholesale markets. They clearly stated that:
- Using calcium carbide to ripen fruits is illegal.
- Strict action will be taken against anyone found breaking the rules.
- Regular inspections will be conducted at fruit shops, godowns, and distribution points.
The food safety body has also asked state food departments to enforce these rules more strictly.
What Can You Do as a Consumer?
Worried about the fruits in your basket? Here’s how you can protect yourself:
- Buy fruits from trusted sources.
- Wash fruits thoroughly before eating.
- If a fruit seems overly shiny or leathery—think twice!
